One of my all-time heroes, Walter Murch, discussing sound design, “worldizing” and much more. Murch, for the uninitiated, is the man behind the amazing soundscapes of THX 1138, Star Wars, and much more…he was far ahead of his time on many levels–especially as an experimental audio pioneer.
I view Murch as a sort of cinematic version of Throbbing Gristle–minus the obsession with evil, murders, and insane performance art, naturally. Murch wasn’t satisfied with simply using the materials at hand in the traditional way–like TG, he pushed his resources and recording devices far beyond their for-the-day accepted uses into new, undiscovered places. In the bargain, he damn well revolutionized recorded sound for the big screen.
